Seeking Asylum in Canada Individuals who arrive at a Canadian port of entry, an inland Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) office, or Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) may seek asylum. At this juncture, CBSA or IRCC officials will assess the eligibility of the individual to make an asylum claim. Alongside presenting substantiated evidence of persecution in their country of origin, asylum seekers undergo rigorous biometric, biographic, security, and criminality screenings before potential refugee status is conferred in Canada.
Refugee Sponsorship Initiatives Canada offers various avenues through which its citizens, communities, and organizations can sponsor refugees, aiding in their resettlement and integration into Canadian society. These sponsorship programs extend support in finding accommodation, offering financial assistance, social and emotional guidance, as well as donating essential supplies like food and clothing to facilitate the refugees’ adaptation to life in Canada.
Among these initiatives, the “Groups of Five” program allows five or more Canadian citizens or permanent residents to sponsor one or more refugees for resettlement within their community. Sponsors must be at least 18 years old and can only sponsor applicants who already possess refugee status in Canada. Another option is the Blended Visa Office-Referred Program, where private sponsors collaborate with the Government of Canada to sponsor refugees identified by the United Nations Refugee Agency.
Furthermore, corporations and organizations can engage in refugee sponsorship as Sponsorship Agreement Holders, Community Sponsors for applicants with existing refugee status in Canada, or through the Joint Assistance Sponsorship Program, which involves partnering with the government to sponsor refugees with specific needs.
